Brower Youth Awards

Each year the Earth Island Institute honors young environmental activists from around the country with the prestigious Brower Youth Awards (www.broweryouthawards). Ripple was hired to promote the 2005 ceremony, hosted by Julia Butterfly Hill and social justice attorney Van Jones; and to conduct media trainings for the award recipients to improve their skills as they move forward in their activist careers. The event was a huge success! More than 750 people attended the ceremony at the Calvin Simmons Auditorium in Oakland, California, and several high-profile media outlets covered the story including MSNBC, the San Francisco Chronicle, ABC, CBS and Grist Magazine. In addition, we assisted a few of the recipients in writing and editing op-eds which ran in the San Francisco Chronicle and on Alternet. We also trained them in how to answer tough questions from the press and stay on message. Julia Butterfly Hill summed the experience up best when she said: "It is both humbling and exciting to witness the courageous leadership of young people today."
