Crash tests aren't the only way to prove the safety of a child's car seat, according to new research by the Ann Arbor-based Ecology Center. Their study, found at http://www.healthycar.org, shows that brand new car seats are made with several dangerous chemicals including bromine, chlorine and lead that can lead to serious health risks for children. Ripple helped launch these findings by booking the study's author, Jeff Gearhart, on CNN's American Morning for a 10 minute feature on the issue. CNN used the B-Roll we created, as did dozens of NBC, CBS and ABC stations around the country. In a separate but related campaign Ripple helped the Ecology Center release the first-ever consumer guide to toxic chemicals in cars, also at http://www.healthycar.org . Over 200 of the most popular 2006- and
2007-model vehicles in the U.S. were ranked in terms of toxic chemical content, making it easier for consumers to choose a car with less "new car smell" and more clean air. Since the average American spends more than 1.5 hours in their car every day, toxic chemical exposure inside vehicles is a major source of potential indoor air pollution. Due to our extensive media outreach the site's launch was covered by a variety of news outlets including MSNBC, Yahoo Health, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press and Automotive News. We also created a separate pitch for auto and environmental blogs and got over 170 of them to cover and link to the site including Freakanomics, Wired, Grist, Consumerist, Cartalk, Cars.com, Huffington Post, Autoblog and Treehugger.
