Behind The Kitchen Door
Valentine’s Day is restaurants’ busiest day of the year, which is why Ripple worked with Restaurant Opportunities Center United on February 14 to release their new reports on the wages and working conditions of restaurant workers in Los Angeles, Miami and Washington, DC. The studies demonstrated that workers in these cities lack paid sick days, fair wages and access to health insurance; and experience racial discrimination. Each of the cities held a summit in their area which attracted hundreds of people, for which Ripple wrote and distributed a local media advisory. We also coordinated with Representative Donna Edward’s office to highlight the WAGES Act that she introduced – a bill that would raise the minimum wage for tipped workers for the first time in 20 years. Our media outreach resulted in high-profile national and local coverage including features in Time Magazine, Washington Post, NBC Washington, LA Times, LA Weekly, Miami Herald and Daily Kos.
